The Kalona Volunteer Fire Department is giving you a chance to own a part of history. Chief Jerry Zahradnek says they’re retiring their 1970 C60 tanker truck #9 and looking to sell the unit to raise money for future equipment. He says sealed bids will be accepted through May 31st for a vehicle that is still operational, just not for fighting fires, “The engine is very good, it only has 22,000 miles on it. The cab is very clean, it does have some rust on the box. It does have a 1,000 gallon steel tank that did have a leak but we got that patched so now it does not leak. It does have a portable pump on it. You could use it to haul water, it’s just old and not real good for the fire service right now.” ....
The Kalona City Council approved the city’s 2022 fiscal year budget following a public hearing Monday night. Next year’s budget is nearly identical to the 2021 budget at just under $3.5 million. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says most expenses will stay the same thanks to revenues that have weathered the pandemic better than anticipated, “For a community like Kalona we didn’t see a dip in our local option sales tax, we held true there with that biggest mover that we see. That’s held pretty consistently throughout this all and our projections for next fiscal year really showed some increases which might be a reflection of individuals staying closer to home and where they choose to spend their money. So we were positive for what we saw for increases there.” ....

By Molly Roberts The Kalona Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 4:01 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. The fire was caused by an unattended candle in the bathroom of a mobile home and, while the fire was brought under control in 20 minutes and was contained to the area of origin, the trailer was deemed a total loss. Kalona Fire Chief Jerry Zahradnek said candles are the number one cause of structure fires across the country. He stressed that candles should never be left unattended and, when burned, should be considered with caution. “You just have to be safe with them. You can’t leave them unattended, you have to make sure they’re blown out before you go to bed, before you walk away,” Zahradnek said. “When they get burned down far, those need to be taken out of service or disposed of.
