Jessica Drenk to present workshop at Huntington Museum of Art


HUNTINGTON — The Huntington Museum of Art is welcoming Jessica Drenk as its latest Walter Gropius master artist.
Drenk will discuss her work during a free public presentation at the museum at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 22. An exhibit showcasing her work continues at HMA through Aug. 1.
In addition to Thursday’s presentation, Drenk will present a workshop titled “The Altered Book: Repurposing Old Books as a Catalyst for Creativity” Friday through Sunday, July 23-25. The workshop is full, as the number of participants is limited to allow for social distancing.
“Jessica Drenk is a very creative artist who is inspired by nature. We think her public presentation and workshop will be rewarding experiences for participants,” Cindy Dearborn, HMA education director, said in a release. ....

.-Derek Eller Gallery is presenting Pieces of a Man, a solo exhibition of monumental black ink and spray paint works on canvas and paper by William Downs. Utilizing his own well-developed visual language in which androgynous moving bodies fluidly interact within a Bosch-ian landscape, Downs composes scenes which evoke compassion, vulnerability, darkness, and light.
Downs applies India ink with brushes, sticks, and brooms, creating a lexicon of mark-making which denotes movement, weight, and depth. Rendered in a line which fluctuates from tight and calligraphic to watery and loose, Downs’ figures are hairless and barefoot. At times, facial features are blurred and repeated, indicating motion. Bodies are either naked or clad in cactus suits, a prickly protective layer which covers most everything but ....

About Julie Anand and Damon Sauer
Damon Sauer and Julie Anand are artists and educators based in Phoenix, Arizona. Anand and Sauer s current collaboration Ground Truth Corona Landmarks explores the the ubiquity of contemporary satellite technology filling the skies in the context of the remains of Cold War satellite calibration markers on the ground. The project was chosen as a Critical Mass Top 50 selection in 2016 and has recently been featured in Wired magazine and Places Journal with upcoming features in Lenscratch and Hyperallergic.
Both artists received their MFA degrees in Photography from the University of New Mexico in 2005 and have been collaborating for over a decade. They use an interdisciplinary, haptic approach to lens-based media to interrogate boundaries and to explore the body as a site of perception. Art New England favorably reviewed Anand and Sauer’s first formal collaboration in 2004. Since then, their collaborative work has been exhibited at venues ....
