Top 10 arts events for Sarasota-Manatee: June 3-9 Improvising post-COVID laughs After more than a year of lockdowns and quarantines, we probably all could use some laughs, like the ones promised in “Life’s a Beach,” which marks the return to live performances by FST Improv. The company is back on the stage of Bowne’s Lab, taking audience suggestions and turning them into scenes and musical numbers that celebrate and satirize life in Sarasota. The production will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays beginning this weekend. Improv director Will Luera said it’s a good time to revisit the show as Sarasota “is starting to poke its head out of its shell after the pandemic and we can all benefit from coming together and laughing at the ridiculous things we’ve all experienced since last spring.” Luera is joined by troupe members Kevin Allen, Sarah Durham and Kyle Van Frank and musical improvisers Sergei Glushonkov and Michelle Neal. Art matters at Sarasota Art Museum Saturday marks the opening day of the first comprehensive retrospective of the painter Robert Colescott with the exhibition “Art and Race matters: The Career of Robert Colescott.” On display through Oct. 21, the exhibit features 53 works produced during 50 years of a prolific career. His colorful and lively paintings tinged with satire have confronted a variety of issues related to race, gender, identity and the challenges of living in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition was curated by Lowery Stokes Sims and organized by Raphaela Platow and originated at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. A musical family Johan Sebastian Bach created some of the world’s best-known and loved music. As the father of 20 children, he also launched a small family musical dynasty, which the Sarasota Orchestra acknowledges in its “All in the Family” program. It features music by J.S. Bach, as well as pieces by his fifth child Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who was considered the most successful of his offspring, and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, J.S. Bach’s second child and first son. The concert will be presented today through Sunday at Holley Hall in the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tony nominee returns to Asolo Rep Asolo Repertory Theatre is welcoming back audiences for a weekend of outdoor concerts by two-time Tony nominee Laura Osnes, who made her Sarasota debut in the pre-Broadway run of “Bonnie & Clyde” in 2010. She also starred on Broadway in “Grease,” “Cinderella,” “South Pacific” and “Bandstand.” Osnes, who was seen in the recent Hallmark Channel movie “A Royal Holiday,” plans to perform some of her favorite theater music and songs from the shows in which she has appeared. Concerts are at 7 p.m . Friday and Saturday at Asolo Rep’s Terrace Theatre, 5555 N. Tamiami Trail. Seating will follow social distancing guidelines, temperatures will be taken and masks are required. Key Chorale goes for Baroque Like other organizations that have been experimenting with digital performances and testing how many artists they can safely bring together in one space, Key Chorale is expanding its group of musicians for its “Bach Together Again” concert that makes its digital debut Friday. Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins said he chose the Baroque program, which features Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Magnificat,” because of the joyful and uplifting qualities in the music.
