When one California-based family decided to ramp up their home’s functionality with a nearly 1,000-square-foot dig-out of their basement plus a kitchen reno they enlisted Kelly Finley of
Joy Street Design. “We ended up designing, essentially, a new house on the lower level,” Finley explains. “In each room, we were trying to maximize the space, because although we were increasing the footprint of the house, what they were trying to achieve in that space was difficult.”
As with many homes in the Bay area, the Oakland house is located on a hill you have to walk up three flights of stairs to get to the front door. Gold Key – Lobby Focused Service
The Highlights: When revenues for a Wicker Park gas station slowed, the owner decided to build an eight-story hotel. To entice guests and neighborhood residents, the design team crafted a lobby with an elevated indoor/outdoor space that showcases the city.
A seventh-floor glass wall slices through the building’s square-shaped footprint to orient the Chicago views, while a circular sculpture, dubbed the Interchange, visible beyond the host desk, creates an anchor point. The color palette is grounded in a black base and complemented by accents of umber, blue, and gray mixed with pops of cream, cyan, and ochre inspired by the Chicago flag.

Just in time for Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley’s 10 year anniversary this spring, One Room Wonders, another non-profit based in Rye, is giving them a much needed remodeled kitchen for the families that stay at the House. After 10 years of serving more than 2,000 families with sick or injured children in the hospital, the existing kitchen and dining space are ready for an upgrade. One Room Wonders has successfully recruited more than 15 local businesses to donate their time, talent, goods and resources to make it all happen.
