President Rajapaksa on Friday laid the foundation stone at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 28 km-long irrigation tunnel which stretches from Elahera Konduruwewa to Palugaswewa Mahamigaswewa and passes through three wildlife sanctuaries. The tunnel is part of the North Central Province Maha Ela Project to divert excess water from the Moragahakanda and Kalu Ganga reservoir. Construction is estimated to cost 244 million U.S. dollars and is financed by the Sri Lankan government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). ....
Share: Colombo (News 1st); The Ministry of Environment has decided to re-issue Kalu Ganga sand mining permits for a temporary period. The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau banned sand mining in a 14 km stretch from the estuary to Nartupana due to excessive sand mining. Accordingly, the extension of 246 mining permits issued for sand mining in the area after December 31st, 2020 was suspended. The decision was taken as the people of Kalutara were facing a drinking water problem due to the rising seawater along the Kalu Ganga during the dry season. Due to this, the supply of drinking water to the people of Kalutara was suspended on several occasions in 2019. ....

The Island editorial (28/12) titled ‘Muck, bucks and impunity’ made me sad and even angry. Sad because this little land of ours cannot take it anymore. It is being battered from all sides: deforestation, serene beaches are turned into hotels, rivers are losing their precious sand, wildlife is threatened by encroachments into their natural habitats for the sake of development, and garbage and rubbish is dumped almost everywhere with absolutely no concern for the environment and, on and on. How can a human being stoop so low: importing foreign waste and dumping it in his country? Now, we all know who (or the majority of them) can be behind these ugly deals, don’t we, anyway? ....
