Shuggie Bain picks up another major literary award


Douglas Stuart’s debut novel Shuggie Bain has picked up another major literary prize.
Shuggie Bain, about a boy growing up amid poverty and addiction in 1980s Glasgow, won book of the year at the British Book Awards.
The announcement was made during a virtual ceremony.
Judges said Shuggie Bain, which won the Booker Prize last year, is a “classic”.

Richard Osman has been crowned author of the year at the British Book Awards after the runaway success of his debut novel The Thursday Murder Club.
Pointless star Osman said his win for his story of elderly amateur sleuths was an absolute dream come true .
Also triumphant was Douglas Stuart s hard-hitting debut Shuggie Bain, which won the overall book of year, following 2020 s Booker Prize-winning success.

'Not fair' to brand JK Rowling 'a transphobic bigot'


An Irish broadcasting regulator has ruled it was not fair for a radio show panelist to brand JK Rowling a transphobic bigot without evidence. 
The author, who has been furiously criticised over a raft of comments in recent months, was accused of transphobia on The Last Word with Matt Cooper last September.  
Complaints were made following the Today FM broadcast, and Ireland s top broadcast regulator has now ruled the remark was not fair as there was no evidence to back up the claim.
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) added the host failed to challenge the statement, ruling that the Code of Fairness, Objectivity and Impartiality in News and Current Affairs was breached.  ....
