Melbourne Victory substitute Lleyton Brooks struck deep into stoppage time to earn his side an important point in a 1-1 Melbourne Derby draw with Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon.
Victory were facing the prospect of a club-first wooden spoon as City opened up a one-goal advantage through a Nick Ansell own goal in the 54th minute before Brooks emerged from the bench to restore parity in the 95th minute of play, ensuring his side moved back above Newcastle Jets into 11th spot on the A-League table. ....
By 2021-06-06T12:50+10:00 Melbourne City has completed the signing of Socceroos forward Matthew Leckie in a major statement of intent from the newly crowned A-League premiers. Leckie, who captained and scored in Australiaâs 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Kuwait on Friday morning (AEST), agreed to terms on a three-year deal with City ending a decade-long stay in Germany. Capped 64 times by the Socceroos, the 30-year-old returns to Victoria after spending nearly four years with Bundesliga club Hertha BSC. City Director of Football Michael Petrillo says Leckieâs arrival will only help the club s push for more success in the future. ....
Share on Twitter After beating Victory 6-0 and 7-0 in their previous two games, City looked set to win all three derbies in a season for the first time via Nick Ansell s unfortunate own goal in the 54th minute, before Brooks struck late. The result means Victory will have to wait for City s rescheduled game against Newcastle - the timing of which will be confirmed later this week - to learn if they will avoid a club-first wooden spoon. Victory are a point ahead of the Jets but Newcastle s goal difference is vastly superior. It was City s first game without Socceroos trio Jamie Maclaren, Curtis Good and Connor Metcalfe, while Craig Noone (soreness) was rested. ....
Tom Smithies 1622865844,1622865844 TALK about throwing down the gauntlet. The other A-League clubs now know that Melbourne City’s attack next season will include Mathew Leckie, as well as Jamie Maclaren and Andrew Nabbout. The polish on the Premier’s Plate won this season has scarcely dried, and yet a major statement of intent for next season has come along already. Whatever happens in the finals, there appears to be no laurel-resting in mind for City coach Patrick Kisnorbo after winning silverware in his first season as a senior men’s head coach. The timing of the deal is quite symbolic too, coming little more than 24 hours after Leckie captained the Socceroos and scored the opening goal in their 3-0 defeat of Kuwait in a World Cup qualifier. For City, and for the A-League, it is a major boon to have the national skipper signing up for next season, after a successful career in the Bundesliga. ....
Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque says Adam Le Fondre's mid-season return has helped the second-placed Sky Blues regain the cutting edge they've lacked since the Englishman's departure at the end of the last A-League season.
The two-time A-League Champion put on his best performance of the current campaign in Sydney's 4-1 win over Adelaide United in Matchweek 23. Le Fondre scored two goals and assisted a third as the reigning Champions notched a fourth-consecutive win to build momentum in pursuit of a third-consecutive A-League title. ....
