Lambda Social April 1, 2021 – Posted in Features By Curtis Gordon Lindsay Mayhew, an English student at Laurentian, has had three of her own poems included in a new poetry book, Feminine Grit: A Collection of Northern Voices. The anthology includes poetry, short stories, and visual artwork from 27 local writers and artists across Northern Ontario. Feminine Grit was edited and published by Emma Daniels (the drag persona of Cory Gaudette, a former Laurentian student). The book celebrates femininity and encourages people to embrace their feminine qualities. Mayhew, who has been writing since high school, says she got into slam poetry about two years ago. She then began attending Wordstock Sudbury slam poetry events. ....

Lambda Social March 14, 2021 – Posted in News By Curtis Gordon st annual Canadian Mining Games. The Laurentian team finished with 966 points just four points behind Laval University, which won the competition with 970 points. Third place went to the University of Alberta. The competition was held virtually and was hosted by McGill University and Polytechnique Montreal. Students competed as individuals or as a team in a range of disciplines through technical and academic challenges. Universities were ranked based on the sum of team members’ scores. Events ranged from ‘Mineral Processing’ to ‘Health and Safety’ to ‘Mine Trivia.’ In total, the weekend featured over 25 events and presentations. ....
Lambda Social March 2, 2021 – Posted in Sports By Curtis Gordon It was not the end Abbey Maillet had hoped for. Maillet had a successful first season with the LU rowing team in 2019-2020. She finished 5 th at the OUA Championships for lightweight singles. This February, she went on to win gold in the 2021 Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in the U23 2000m Women’s Lightweight race. With this victory, the second-year rowing athlete had qualified for the 2021 World Rowing Indoor Championships, which were held virtually last week. Unfortunately, Maillet recently suffered a wrist injury that kept her from competing in the competition. ....
Lambda Social February 22, 2021 – Posted in Sports By Curtis Gordon On Tuesday, Laurentian’s varsity swim team returned to training after a two-month hiatus due to lockdown restrictions. The gaps in training have been difficult for varsity athletes, but Cameron McCabe, a fourth-year member of the team, says it can be especially hard for swimmers to take time away. “If you miss even that one day, you feel something. A lot of people underestimate swimming a lot,” McCabe said. Despite the disruptions, the team is excited to be back in the pool. Nick Vanderschoor, a fourth-year member of the team, said “it’s been different… We’ve had some challenges, but we don’t really notice it because we’re happy just to get pool time.” ....
