Scott Spellmon (left) conducted his first ever visit to the Pacific Ocean Division (POD), engaging with key military and governmental partners, as well as with members of the USACE team April 12 - 16. As part of his visit, the 55th Chief of Engineers conducted office calls with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) leaders to discuss USACE support capabilities, expertise, and engagements with international partners throughout the region. USACE officials tour Elim, Alaska March 3, 2021, by Eldin Ganic During a tour of Alaska District projects, a high-level Army Corps delegation visited the existing harbor in Elim on February 17. Maj. Gen. William Graham, deputy commanding general for Civil and Emergency Operations U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters; Col. Kirk Gibbs, commander of Pacific Ocean Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and Col. Damon Delarosa, district commander, took part in the visit. “The district currently anticipates completing a feasibility study to make navigation improvements to the harbor,” said USACE in their announcement. USACE photo The purpose of the study is to identify a feasible solution that provides safe, reliable, and efficient navigation, access and moorage for the subsistence and commercial fleet as well as fuel and freight barges that service the community of Elim. ....
Fri, 01/22/2021 - 3:39pm The Dunleavy administration argues the Alaska Statehood Act requires it to challenge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ denial of a key wetlands permit for the Pebble project. The state appeal claims that decision was made using an unprecedented evaluation of the project’s environmental impacts. Acting Attorney General Ed Sniffen signed the state’s 59-page brief on Friday appealing the Corps Alaska District’s November record of decision denying Pebble construction permits. Dunleavy said Jan. 8 the state would appeal the Corps’ decision in a move many opponents of the mine contend directly contradicts the governor’s long standing insistence that he is “neutral” towards Pebble. ....
