Ms Mulherin was first elected to Ballina Town Council in 1999 and was also a Mayo County Councillor from 2004 until her election to Dail Eireann in 2011. She lost her seat in the 2016 general election, and later served as a Senator from 2016 to 2020, after being nominated by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
