In 1959, the waning days of the Jim Crow era, Clark College graduate Marion Gerald Hood applied to Emory University School of Medicine. The response from the school’s director of admissions, L. L. Clegg, was pointed and swift: “I am sorry I must write you that we are not authorized to consider for admission a member of the Negro race.”
The school returned Hood’s $5 application fee. “I don’t even know if they looked at my credentials,” he says. Hood went on to attend medical school at Loyola University in Chicago and to enjoy a long and distinguished career in gynecology and obstetrics in Atlanta. ....

Through Council on Competitiveness, Emory takes role in increasing American innovation

Since 2018, Emory leaders have worked closely with the Council on Competitiveness, composed of industry CEOs, university presidents and national lab directors. The council has a long history of working to identify and advocate for recommendations that promote U.S. innovation capacity and capability.
C. Michael Cassidy, director of the Emory Biomedical Catalyst, who was Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) president and CEO before joining the university in 2018, is a council advisor. In his role at Emory, Cassidy leads efforts to enhance innovation, entrepreneurship and development of intellectual property, as well as identifying and developing areas of frontier research. Cassidy has been deeply involved with the council across two decades and was named a senior fellow when he retired from the GRA. ....

Emory joins new national network to prevent sexual harassment in higher education

Emory University is one of 13 organizations that has joined the partner network as an inaugural group.
“We recognize that historically male-dominated and hierarchical environments such as academia, including medicine, can be fertile ground for sexual harassing behaviors,” says Carolyn Meltzer, MD, who is the chief diversity and inclusion officer at Emory’s School of Medicine and the university’s representative in the partner network. “My colleagues and I at Emory look forward to continuing our work on mitigating systemic gender bias and inequity as a member institution of the partner network, and filtering those efforts to a local level in Atlanta.” ....
