Philippines March exports grew at fastest pace in more than 10 years

MANILA, May 7 (Reuters) - Philippine exports expanded at the fastest pace in more than 10 years in March, the statistics agency said on Friday, driven by strong demand from major trading partners, while imports rose at the highest rate in more than two years.
Outbound shipments increased 31.6% from a year earlier in March, the highest since September 2010, while imports rose 16.6% from last year, resulting in a wider trade deficit of $2.4 billion compared with the previous month. (Reporting by Karen Lema Editing by Ed Davies) ....

MANILA, May 5 (Reuters) - Philippine inflation steadied to an annual rate of 4.5% in April, as slower price increases for key food items such as rice and vegetables offset higher energy costs, data from the statistics agency showed on Wednesday.
April inflation was unchanged from March and below the median forecast of 4.7% in a Reuters poll and within the central bank’s 4.2%-5.0% projected range for the month.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and fuel prices, eased to 3.3% in April, after a 3.5% reading in March . ....

Teodoro Locsin on Monday, May 3 demanded in an expletive-laced message on Twitter that China’s vessels get out of disputed waters, marking the latest exchange in a war of words with Beijing over its activities in the South China Sea.
The comments by Locsin, known for making blunt remarks at times, follow Manila’s protests for what it calls the “illegal” presence of hundreds of Chinese boats inside the Philippines 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

MANILA, April 26 (Reuters) - The Philippines announced on Monday that its COVID-19 cases had exceeded one million, as the country sought to boost healthcare capacity to ease strains on hospitals and medical staff stretched by a second wave of infections.
The Philippines imposed a two-week lockdown of Manila and surrounding provinces late last month to try to stem a surge in cases blamed on more contagious COVID-19 variants. ....
