Museum Minute: "The Last of Their Race"

Artist John Mix Stanley crossed thousands of miles among the western territories in the mid-1800 s. He even went as far as Hawaii in his travels. He was prolific and spent his mature years depicting the Western landscape and it s people.
His goal was to create a record of people who he, in a misguided way, thought were doomed, said Karen McWhorter, the curator of the Whitney Western Museum. So, he created some 200-plus paintings and had them on view at the Smithsonian Art Museum in D.C. at a gallery there.
McWhorter said the gallery burned in a fire destroying the majority of his life s work. Only seven of Stanley s more than 200 survived. He spent the rest of life trying to recoup that loss and recreate some of his earlier works. ....

Painter Thomas Moran visited Yellowstone National Park in 1871. A year before, Yellowstone became the world s first national park. Moran traveled to Yellowstone on a formal expedition to document both in text and imagery of the place to the world.
Moran was tasked with bringing color to Yellowstone, said Karen McWhorter, the curator of the Whitney Western Art Museum. He did that beautifully, particularly in watercolors. He worked in watercolors in the field quickly and adeptly. Watercolors dry quickly, certainly more quickly than oils.
Moran did watercolor out in the field and also came back to the studio and created larger, finished paintings in watercolor. One of those larger, finished watercolors is of the Grand Prismatic Spring. ....

Museum Minute: The Sharp Cabin

The Whitney Western Art Museum has a studio collection of Joseph Henry Sharp. He is best known as a Tao Society artist, but he also spent time in Montana. Karen McWhorter, the museum s curator, said he spent his winters in Montana and his summers in New Mexico. He built a cabin in Crow Agency.
It is exactly where he built his studio cabin, which he called his Absarokee hut named after the Crow people, who were his inspiration, his neighbors, his friends and his subjects, said McWhorter.
He painted Native people from nearby reservations. But this cabin is also where he perfected his famous fire light scenes. ....
