Reno County leaves governor's mask mandate in place for three more weeks

The Reno County Commission will leave in place the governor’s mask mandate for the county until at least March 30, when the board will take it up for discussion once again.
Local health officials asked the commission on Tuesday to leave the order in place at least for another month, to allow more employees in high contract critical jobs to be vaccinated against the virus.
But Commission Chair Ron Hirst and Commissioner Daniel Friesen wanted to review it sooner.
Hirst initially asked that the item be placed on Tuesday’s agenda after he visited family in Texas and found, in the brief time he was there, that masks were still being worn in most businesses despite the governor of Texas lifting that state’s mandate. ....

Governor's mask mandate back on Reno County Commission agenda

It was unclear if the commission will take public comment on the issue.
Also on Tuesday’s agenda, as the meeting’s final business item, are the proposed regulations on commercial wind systems.
No public comment is expected on that item since the commission heard an hour of debate two weeks ago.
Commission Chairman Ron Hirst asked that the mask issue be placed on Tuesday’s agenda, said County Administrator Randy Partington.
Hirst was also the one who had it placed on the commission agenda on Dec. 22, when, after 90 minutes of public comment, the commission allowed the restriction to stand. At that time, however, Hirst indicated he’d bring it up again in the future. ....

Reno County drops to Yellow alert, mass vaccination clinics continue

Reno County moved back into its “Yellow alert status on Tuesday, as Kansas marked a year and a day of the COVID-19 pandemic being declared in the state.
That is the lowest active alert level on the county’s dashboard, indicating a “moderate to low number of cases, with most from a known source of exposure.”
Reno County Health officials, meanwhile, announced they have scheduled three more COVID-19 first-dose mass distribution clinics and three second-dose events over the next three weeks at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
After that, officials tentatively projected, the county may be able to move into the next category of vaccine recipients under phase 2 of the state’s distribution guidelines, which would be people living in congregate settings and “critical workers in high-contact jobs.” ....

Reno County to let mass gathering restriction expire
Reno County health officials announced plans to allow a mass gathering limit in Reno County to expire next week.
The order from interim Reno County Health Officer Karen Hammersmith limiting gathering sizes to 10 people has been in place for 95 days. First adopted Nov. 18, it was extended twice.
Before that, a limit to mass gatherings of no more than 100 people was put in place on Oct. 13.
All limits will now be allowed to expire next Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Reno County, however, will remain under the Governor’s mask mandate.
The action comes as the county’s 14-day new positive COVID-19 case count dropped below 200, and the two-week positive test rate slipped to 11.6%. ....

COVID-19 numbers continue to improve, though more deaths recorded locally
COVID-19 case counts in Reno County have come down quite a bit over the past week, and it appears the county may move into “orange status” on the alert level for school gating criteria this week.
If so, it will be the first time since early October that local 14-day case counts and positive test rates were low enough to reduce the alert status, said Reno County Health Department assistant director Karen Hammersmith.
But while the number of new cases has been in single digits for seven of the last 10 days – there were 12 new cases reported Tuesday and 24 on Feb. 4 – residents continue to be hospitalized and die from the disease. ....
