That s the advice from a Bay of Plenty community leader after earthquakes and tsunami alerts caused disruption across the Bay of Plenty and
other parts of the country yesterday.
People from across the region fled for higher ground after a powerful magnitude 8.1 earthquake in the Kermadec area about 1000km northeast of New Zealand triggered a tsunami warning. ....

The growth of Tauranga s vibrant arts and culture scene is the catalyst behind a newly created council role to help the sector embrace future opportunities.
James Wilson, formerly of Baycourt, has been appointed arts and
culture manager and he plans to showcase the city s talent on a national level.
He is not alone, as the Tauranga Arts Festival and Tauranga Art Gallery have also welcomed new directors who are passionate about supporting and exhibiting local talent. ....

A guardian posted at the entrance to the closed Omanawa Falls access says dozens of people are being turned away every day – with some still slipping through and risking injury to themselves and rescuers.
Social media posts promoting the beauty of the falls seem to be part of the problem, with some would-be visitors saying that s what drew them to the falls in spite of official warnings. ....

For the first time in five years, Tauranga City Council is hosting a New year s Eve celebration in Mount Maunganui.
The Mount used to be one of New Zealand s New Year s Eve party hotspots, but
for five years it s had no public entertainment or fireworks display.
