Irises are a genus of roughly 300 species of plants in the Iridaceae family. The most well-known is the bearded iris, or common garden iris, a species with fan-shaped flowers that grow on tall stems.
Named for the Greek god of the rainbow, irises are found in paintings, used in perfumes, and common in flower arrangements. Irises are celebrated the world over with Iris Day, but the day is a formal celebration in Brussels, Belgium. There, where it is also known as the Festival of Irises or Iris Festival, it honors the flowering time of the yellow iris, the symbol of the region and emblem on its flag. It also celebrates the victory over the Nazis in World War II, and is the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of Brussels. ....

After being forced to skip a year, the Royal Greenhouses in Laeken are back open to the public. The historical gardens and greenhouses of the royal domain are open for a few short weeks every year. While not every greenhouse can be open as social distancing cannot be guaranteed, the royal family is making up for it by increasing the outdoor space open to visitors. See the circular rose garden and temple ruins on the shore of one of the domain’s lakes. The tour continues to greenhouses with subtropical plants, palm trees and the Orangery, where orange and laurel trees are safe all winter. ....

A hybrid Iris Festival celebrates all things Brussels

Last year was the first time in 30 years that the Iris Festival had to be cancelled. While formal speeches were made on this official Brussels community holiday, there was no big public party the likes of which Brussels residents have come to know and love over the decades.
That will not happen this year. While it will look and feel very different, there will be an Iris Festival next weekend – and beyond.
“The Iris Festival is an official community holiday in the Brussels region,” says Jeroen Roppe of tourist agency Visit Brussels. “It’s on 8 May, which is Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of the Second World War. It was adopted as Brussels’ ‘feast day’ in 2003.” ....

Iris Festival returns to downtown Greeneville

GREENEVILLE â After cancellation due to COVID in 2020, the annual Iris Festival hosted by the Greene County Partnership is scheduled to return this year on Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16, in historic downtown Greeneville.
The Iris Festival was created in 1994 and has become the communityâs major festival of the year, featuring artists, craftsmen, merchants, food vendors and entertainers from across the country.
This yearâs festival will feature a dance stage, an entertainment stage, the very popular Merchantsâ Market, the Sundown on Depot Cruise-In, Miss Iris Festival Pageant and much more.
In order to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 and practice social distancing, vendors will be appropriately spaced away from each other and hand sanitizer will be available throughout the festival area. ....
