NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — We are going in depth and digging into President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan and how part of this massive relief plan benefits disadvantaged farmers.
The plan benefits Black farmers in a way that some experts say hasn t happened with any legislation since the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
So, $5 billion of the $1.9 trillion package will be going to farmers. Advocates say this is step towards righting a wrong after a long period of mistreatment of Black farmers from the government and others. Some say it s a form of reparations. ....

As part of a conversation on Black land ownership, farming and food security, Rural Humanities will offer a webinar, “Black Land Matters: A Rural Humanities Webinar on Black Farming and Food Security,” on March 4 at 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to all; registration prior to the event is recommended.
The webinar will feature Natalie Baszile, filmmaker and author of the novel Queen Sugar, and Karen Washington, farmer and co-owner at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York, and activist and co-founder of Black Urban Growers (BUGS). Meanwhile, white farmers had few of these problems, Wright says. 
“That’s because of the local control, at the county level. You almost need to eliminate the county committees and local controls. Agriculture’s unique for that kind of county control, which sounds good for some folks. But not Black folk,” says Wright, who has since retired. “Local control is good, providing that you have a system of oversight to avoid having those local folk take care of themselves, their family, and their friends. In which case, Blacks have happened not to be any of the above, and they normally didn’t get services.”  ....
