On silver screens and through radio waves, between stanzas, and, yes, in even TikTok shorts, Black artists are and always have been cultural vanguards, even while powerful institutions have failed to paythemproper dues. In a year stocked with violence, loss, and grief, Black art has been a lightning rod for joy and mourning alike. At Georgetown, too, the Black creative community thrives on, producing vibrant art on a campus much more designed for white consultants than Black artists. As singers, actors, poets, dancers, rappers, writers, or something else entirely, these creatives have developed unforgettable, heartful work. ....

Dorothy Paige-Turner can be described as sort of well a renaissance woman. In addition to singing and being a retired teacher, she writes books, poetry and plays, leads a number of youth art initiatives, speaks French and has received many awards for her work throughout the years. She was also inducted into the Rockford Fine Arts Coalition 2020 Hall of Fame. Paige-Turner grew up in Arkansas. She said she had dreams of becoming an opera singer. “I am classically trained. I mean, I have a degree in music education, special emphasis in voice, and I sang opera,” she explained,” “and I wanted to be the next Leontyne Price.” ....

Black Theatre Ensemble, like all theater groups on campus, has been faced with the difficult task of reimagining theater as a digital medium. Unlike other theater troupes, however, BTE is a unique, artistic social group on campus dedicated to celebrating Black art and culture. “We’re here to be a resource,” Kay Kemp, CC ’22, BTE’s executive playwright and art director, said in an interview with Spectator. “We’re here to be teachers and to be a group of people you can talk to on campus and make friends. . We would love to have perfect productions everyone would but we are not solely focused on the product, we’re more focused on the process.” ....
