OK, pay attention now: this is a lesson in the First Amendment. And in common sense. Almost 40 years ago in the suburbs of Chicago I organized something we called Operation BookLift. It responded to a plea from an inner city teacher who lamented that many of her economically-challenged students had no books at home. None. Zilch. Operation BookLift worked with schools, churches and parents to collect more than 20,000 children’s books of all types. The goal was to provide these books to children who could take them home as their own. It succeeded wildly. We culled through the vast piles of collected books in a borrowed school gymnasium looking for torn or dirty copies and inappropriate ones. Sure, there were a number meant more for grownups and even a couple of Playboy magazines that got caught up in the collection. ....
