LAHORE: The government has approved a Rs7bn project to make the Maulana Shaukat Ali Road signal free, connecting the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train (Multan Road) with the Metro Bus (Green Line) on the Ferozepur Road. The proposal of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) claims that the project would not only reduce the travel time from Kharak Stop (Multan Road) to Qainchi (Ferozepur Road) from 45 minutes to 15 minutes but it would also improve the environment in the localities along the road. “The proposal to make the road a signal-free corridor has been approved recently. Soon it will materialise through the PC-1, bidding and launch of this mega project,” said LDA Chief Engineer Mazhar Hussain Asif. He added the project would cover about a 15km long major artery of Lahore. ....
LAHORE: The Parks & Horticulture Authority (PHA) has decided to compile data of all the trees and saplings it owns in its controlled areas to assess the Lahore’s actual requirement and the authority’s initiatives to improve the situation and overcome related issues. “We have no reliable data related to total number of saplings, plants/trees we have or lost in the Punjab capital. However, we have not felled even a single tree in Lahore during the last two years or so,” PHA Director General Jawad Qureshi told Dawn on Sunday. “I also confirm that we have added one million plants/trees to the city’s ecosystem,” he claimed. ....

The metropolitan corporation has failed to build new public toilets, while 12 out of the 25 facilities present earlier have been closed during the past two years because of high expenses. The population of Lahore is estimated to have risen to about 15 million, of whom about three million travel in the city daily. ....
