The economies of the Bahamas and The Caribbean region are faced with challenges that are decades (if not centuries) in the making. At one time the areas were of significant importance to European countries as they sought power and prestige. Militarily the countries were fighting over the Caribbean region as they searched for military bases that would enable them to reach South America and control key islands such as Cuba while the European merchants wanted control over real estate to access the then rare and profitable goods such as sugar and tobacco. ....
Optimism for UK, Caribbean travel - CARIBBEAN Hotel and Tourism Association first vice-president Nicola Madden-Greig was optimistic that the region was making progress towards reopening travel with different countries, such as the United Kingdom. She said this during a webinar hosted by the Caribbean Council and the Colibri Corporate Advisory on UK-Caribbean travel during the pandemic. Madden-Greig said the regional tourism sector was hard hit last year by the pandemic, with a loss of US$36 billion in gross domestic product and thousands of workers lost their jobs as well. She was concerned about further losses, if regional tourism was not restarted in a substantial way soon. ....
May 20, 2021 Although unknown as a campaign strategist in Barbados, Guy Hewitt is no political neophyte. He spoke to Barbados TODAY on his leadership in the Windrush scandal that garnered him international recognition. Hewitt explained that the Windrush scandal was a consequence of the 2012 ill-conceived British immigration policy “to create a really hostile environment for illegal immigrants”. He explained that the outcome of this was that many “elderly, West Indian-born, long-term residents in Britain got shut out of the system.” Due to a lack of documentation to confirm their status, these Caribbean-born migrants, many Barbadian, were denied the right to work, denied access to their bank accounts, and denied healthcare and other state benefits. The real tragedy was that these undocumented, elderly persons were “not treated as anomalies to be regularised” but as Hewitt explained, as “illegal immigrants”. ....
