New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday, July 9, asked the Uttar Pradesh government not to take action on earlier notices sent to protesters who had agitated against the Citizenship Amendment Act to recover alleged losses from public property damage caused during the protests.
The apex court also, however, said that the state can take action as per the law and in accordance with new rules. ....

In jail for 14-22 yrs, 13 Agra inmates get bail

The Supreme Court today granted interim bail to 13 prisoners languishing in an Agra jail for 14 to 22 years even after it was established that they were juveniles at the time of commission of offence.
A Bench led by Justice Indira Banerjee ordered the release of the 13 prisoners after senior advocate Garima Prashad, representing the UP Government, said interim bail might be granted to them. She, however, said the facts needed to be verified.
They were convicted by trial courts and in many cases their conviction was upheld by the Allahabad High Court. The petitioners moved the top court after the fact about their juvenility at the time of crime came to light via a PIL. ....
