The UK food industry is warning that a deluge of new post-Brexit red tape which comes into effect today will increase export paperwork by a third and make some sales to Europe unviable.
The European Union is today introducing a wave of new requirements for composite (multi-ingredient) food products entering the bloc from third countries like the UK.
This is on top of the myriad border checks that began on January 1 when the UK left the EU s Single Market and Customs Union and starting trading with the bloc on looser terms. ....

Chilled food body helps battle Brexit export red tape

The Chilled Food Association (CFA) is supporting vets battling the rising tide of costly red tape needed to allow Great Britain to transport short shelf-life composite foods of animal origin into the EU.
A CFA survey of chilled and frozen composite products estimated that 30,000 Export Health Certificates (EHCs) would be required where none were before.
According to Animal and Plant Health (APHA) data provided to the industry, there was a 126-fold increase in the total number of EHCs for EU export issued in January/February 2021 compared with the same period last year. The number rose from 491 in that period in 2020 to 61,802 in 2021. Before Brexit, GB was part of the EU trading bloc, so such validation was not needed. ....
