BWW Review: FANDANGO at St John's Church, Halifax Street

Reviewed by Ewart Shaw, Friday 16th April 2021.
Come on Bocchers write me a quintet . So spake Simon Martyn-Ellis on the genesis of the work which gave the concert its name, the Guitar Quintet in D major G 448, known as the Boccherini
Fandango, Ensemble Galante invited him and violin/viola player Karina Schmitz to come across and join them for a concert of Spanish-influenced music with guitar. I d already planned to go to both performances but had I only attended the Friday I d have been satisfied greatly by the music. As it is I went back again. I d taken a good look at the housework and decided that good look was all it was going to get. ....

Quartet delivers an intimate, powerful experience

ROB KENNEDY.
PROVING their ability to work across chamber music platforms, The Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) as a string quartet showed just how good they are in any form.
The players in AHE were Skye McIntosh, violin, Matthew Greco, violin, Karina Schmitz, viola, Daniel Yeadon, cello.
The longer I live, and the more music I hear, I become further convinced that the string quartet offers the greatest musical experience.
AHE began with the lively and complex “String Quartet in G Minor, Ben. 339″ by Ignaz Joseph Pleyel. This had a fine tune running through the first movement. Listening to this while sitting in the gallery above the main audience, the music seemed to be directly pointed at me, making this a more intimate and powerful experience. ....

Times are changed, but Haydn rewards live listeners

The Australian Haydn Ensemble, Tempora Mutantur, Albert Hall, December 17. Reviewed by
GRAHAM McDONALD.
WE normally hear the Sydney-based Haydn Ensemble three or four times a year, but this was but their second performance for 2020 following another back in February. A different program had been planned for this tour, but it was changed to include Haydn’s Symphony No.64, known by the nickname of “Tempora Mutantur” – “times are changed”. Hard to argue with that.
The Haydn Ensemble has always had flexible numbers of musicians, depending on the repertoire. For this program it was a string quartet with fortepiano and the addition of a flute for the Haydn Symphony. Violinist Skye McIntosh, the founder and artistic director of the ensemble, was joined by guest director Erin Helyard on fortepiano, with regular second violin Matthew Greco, Karina Schmitz on viola, cellist Daniel Yeadon and Melissa Farrow on flute. ....
