Republic of Consciousness prize shares £20,000 pot between longlist

Last modified on Wed 19 May 2021 09.40 EDT
The Scottish author Shola von Reinhold has won the Republic of Consciousness prize for small presses for their “dazzling” queer debut novel LOTE. But the £20,000 prize money will not go to von Reinhold alone: instead, in a first, it is being split among the 10 publishers on the longlist.
LOTE follows Mathilda, a black woman who becomes fixated by a forgotten black Scottish modernist poet. Released by London independent press Jacaranda as part of founder Valerie Brandes’ initiative to publish 20 black British writers in 2020, it is, said prize judge John Mitchinson, a dazzling novel that makes the reader “stand back and gasp at the wit, beauty and mischief von Reinhold has brocaded into the story”. ....

'A Perfect Cemetery' by Federico Falco: Short Stories about Community and Isolation in Rural Argentina

‘A Perfect Cemetery’ by Federico Falco: Short Stories about Community and Isolation in Rural Argentina By Will Huddleston | 07 April, 2021
According the writer G.K. Chesterton, “the man who lives in a small community lives in a much larger world”, a point which ought to be remembered throughout
A Perfect Cemetery, the fourth collection of short stories from Federico Falco. The Argentinian – who also has a novel and book of poems to his name – places his characters far from the madding crowd, scattered in tiny hamlets and small towns across his native Córdoba. In these little worlds, Falco poses big questions, inviting us to consider the various meanings of community, the effects of solitude and insularity, and the bonds we form with the natural world. ....

What I learned from reading female writers from every country in the world

What I learned from reading female writers from every country in the world
Sophie Baggott
Three years ago, when I set out to read writing by a woman from every country in the world, I had no idea of the ways in which this journey would surprise me, challenge me and, as life became smaller, sustain me.
What I did know was that I needed to broaden my bookcase far beyond the canon. So in June 2018, I started a blog where I would chart my way, gather tips from readers and review all 199 books, poems and stories. (I was more inclusive than some official lists – bringing in Palestine, Tibet and Kosovo, for instance). It felt surreal in December last year when I closed Le Déserteur by Hélène Kaziende from Niger, the very last country on my list. Taking the form of a letter to Africa, this short story explores the fraught decision to leave a place of origin. I had learned of Kaziende’s work through my research into Nigerien literature, and it took month ....

LITERATURE Letters From Latin America

EMPTY HOUSES (Daunt Books, £9.99), Mexican writer Brenda Navarro’s first novel, is the devastating story of a mother who loses her small child in a playground somewhere in Mexico and her relentless search to find him.
It is also the story of a working-class woman who has kidnapped the  child in order to fulfil her maternal desires and, fittingly,  the chapters begin with epigraphs from the work of Polish poet Wisława Szymborska that set the tone for what it is yet to come.
The narrative alternates between the harrowing stories of these two desperate woman as they try to make sense of motherhood, mental and physical abuse and trauma in a novel that questions maternal instincts in patriarchies and the place of women in modern society. ....
