Magistrate’s request rejected in Uzair Baloch case

KARACHI:
The request of a judicial magistrate to have his statement recorded via video link was rejected by a special anti-terrorism court.
The magistrate put this request forward as he was unable to appear in person in relation to his recording of the confessional statement of alleged Lyari gangster Uzair Baloch.
Special Court No 16 of the Anti-Terrorism Complex in Karachi Central Jail rejected the plea while it was hearing a case against the murder of a Rangers official. The court summoned the judicial magistrate and the investigating officer, in person, at the next hearing.

17 inmates granted early release
Eid remission not available to people convicted of terrorism, heinous crimes
KARACHI:
Like every year, the Sindh government has announced constitutional relief to select prisoners on the festive occasion of Eidul Fitr.
The Sindh government has announced 90 day remission for women prisoners aged 60 and above and for men aged 65 and above as well as for inmates who have completed one third of their sentence.
However, inmates serving sentences for committing treason, terrorism, murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping for extortion and other heinous crimes will not get the benefit of remission.
The remission has reduced the jail term for 81 eligible prisoners and at least 17 among them will be able to secure early release and go home to celebrate Eid with their families. However, sources say that going home for Eid for the prisoners is dependent on the completion of legal procedures. According to the notification issued by the Prisons IG, prisoners
