Disgruntled Ports of Auckland workers have walked off the job to cast a vote of no confidence in senior management and the company s board. 
Today s meeting puts more pressure on chief executive Tony Gibson, who has to date ignored calls to walk from the top job following three deaths at the port and the subsequent release of a scathing health and safety review. 
Dozens of workers packed into today s Maritime Union meeting at Auckland s Okahu Bay Bowling Club. Board members, including chair Bill Osborne, were invited too but did not show up.  ....

Worker injured at Auckland port two days after damning report on safety concerns

An ambulance was called to treat an injured worker at the Ports of Auckland last week - just two days after a damning report revealed widespread safety concerns.
Ports chief executive Tony Gibson said things would change but on Thursday a stevedore fell six feet through a rusted hatch on a ship.
Maritime Union Auckland spokesman Grant Williams said she landed on her tailbone and suffered a number of injuries.
Her arm, her thumb, shin, ankles, not life threatening [but] serious enough to be off work, but she s doing all right, she s in good spirits right now, Williams said. ....

Port supply chain problems could continue, minister warns

Transport Minister Michael Wood warns that supply chain problems at the ports will continue for much of this year.
Wood told the Transport Select Committee that the global index of shipping reliability is at the lowest levels ever recorded.
He says Covid-19, industrial action at port in Australia and extreme weather events have all impacted reliability.
We re dealing with a global problem, it is not something that we can fix and unfortunately we expect it to last well into this year, he said.
Wood said domestically there were also problems with cranes and staffing at Auckland Port, which was creating the perfect storm . ....

Ports of Auckland s chief executive is entirely blaming Covid-19 for delays, and says reporting of safety issues has been low because Māori and Pacific workers do not raise risks.
