Arbor Day tradition continues at Wooster City Schools


WOOSTER  Blake Wright forgot to grab his magnolia tree sapling, set outside for the fifth graders at Edgewood Middle School. He instead rushed up the road to Kean Elementary to celebrate Arbor Day with his sister, Lillie, a first-grader, who received a dogwood sapling.
Blake remembered receiving his dogwood sapling as a first-grader, although he couldn’t remember if he planted it. His sister was excited to be taking home her tree, part of a Wooster City Schools tradition that started in the late 1950s.
Arbor Day is celebrated across the United States, usually on the last Friday in April. It’s an environmental holiday established in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in 1872, almost 100 years before the first Earth Day. It’s commonly celebrated by planting trees. ....

Chippewa school board hires Ira Hamman as treasurer


April 12 meeting
KEY ACTION  Voted unanimously to hire
 Ira Hamman as the district s new treasurer. Hamman s first day will be May 17. 
DISCUSSION Hamman most recently worked as treasurer at Fremont City Schools. He replaces Molly Koch, who left in February.
Hamman did not appear at the meeting, though he is expected to be at the next one, along with interim Treasurer Christine Angerer.
Hamman s contract runs through July 31, 2024, board President Linda Fenn said.
Board member Bernadette Rohr thanked Fenn and Superintendent Todd Osborn for their work on the search. It was intense, Fenn acknowledged. 
The board hired the Summit Educational Service Center to conduct the treasurer search. Ten people had applied for the position, which the ESC narrowed to seven, then down to three for board members to interview. Interviews took place April 1. ....

Wooster's first Black teacher fought for right to teach in hometown


WOOSTER  Virginia Blackwell wanted to be a teacher and she wanted to be a teacher in her hometown.
The opportunity finally arrived in 1963, almost 20 years after Blackwell earned her degree from West Virginia State College, an all-Black school at that time. Wooster City Schools hired her as a special education teacher, making her the first Black teacher in the district’s history.
“She was just glad she got to teach… She didn’t look at it as a fight but her right,” said Carolyn Huff of her mother, who died on March 3. She was 98.
Virginia Blackwell s early years
Blackwell was born on March 29, 1922, in Wooster. She graduated from Wooster High School in 1940 and earned a degree in music education with a minor in history from West Virginia State College in 1944. ....
