The first transgender newsreader in Bangladesh broke down in tears after making her television debut, hailed as a historic step for the conservative nation.
Tashnuva Anan Shishir, 29, was overcome with emotion after presenting her first news bulletin, aired on the private channel Boishakhi TV.
Her debut coincided with International Women s Day, a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate women and their achievements. The occasion is a focal point in the women s rights movement, increasing awareness in regards to gender equality, reproductive rights and violence against women. ....

Bangladesh’s first transgender news anchor said she hopes to change society after making her TV debut on International Women’s Day.
Tashnuva Anan Shishir, who previously worked as a rights activist and actress, debuted on Dhaka-based Boishakhi TV on Monday.
She read a three-minute news bulletin and, after finishing, cried as her colleagues applauded and cheered.
The 29-year-old said: “I was very nervous, I was feeling so much emotional, but I had in my mind that I must overcome this ordeal, this final test.”
Shishir, who previously worked as a rights activist and an actor, appeared before audience on Monday (Al-emrun Garjon/AP) ....
