WHITEHALL, Mich. – A change in Lake Michigan water levels has revealed a shipwreck from the 1880s that is visible in western Michigan for the first time since 2018.
Experts believe it s the wooden spine of the Contest, said Craig Rich, director of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association.
The wreckage is along the shore in Muskegon County, near where the White Lake channel meets Lake Michigan.
In 2018, major parts were seen for the first time since 1974, a result of changes in lake current, water levels and sand. Now the wreckage is visible again. ....

Shipwreck! The Wanby Hit The Rocks in Kennebunkport 100 Years Ago

At 10:30 in the morning on March 9, 1921, the ship, The Wanby hit the rocks off Walker s Point in Kennebunkport. The groan of the 3991-ton British ship being dragged across the rocks could be heard from Kennebunkport all the to Cape Porpoise, three miles away! Schools from around the area closed for the day so kids could watch the Coast Guard try and salvage the ship, to no avail.
Kennebunk Historical Society

Luckily, no one was hurt in the shipwreck. In fact, things ended up pretty good for the crew. The Kennebunkport Historical Society wrote on their Facebook Page this week:
Captain David Simpson ordered his crew ashore. The sailors bunked with hospitable local families who filled every minute of their stay with dances in their honor, clam digs, day trips to Portland, etc. Four cases of real Scotch whiskey salvaged from the Wandby were consumed during the interim. Tears of friendship were shed all around when the crew was sent back to England three weeks lat ....

Royal Navy locates, images War of Independence-era wreck

HMS
Cassandra, a C-Class cruiser, struck a mine off the coast of Saaremaa, while en route to Tallinn, on the night of December 4-5 1918, sinking quickly, with the loss of 11 lives from the 400-strong crew, the Royal Navy says.
The wreck was rediscovered and its presence formally announced over 10 years ago, by the Estonian Navy (Merevägi) and Estonian Maritime Museum (Meremuuseum).
Now, the Devonport-based HMS
Echo, a survey vessel, was able to image
Cassandra s wreck via multibeam echo sounding, revealing that she came to rest on her starboard side, with about 20 meters of her bow section missing.
HMS
Cassandra was laid down during World War One, and commissioned into the Royal Navy in June 1917, in time to see active service in both that war and in the Baltic. ....
