Changi: impacted by the non-stop rain? The recent non-stop rain due to the monsoon surge makes us worry about a repeat of the mass deaths that we saw at Chek Jawa in 2007. Murky water suggests flood waters arriving from the Johor River. At Changi today, the water was very murky but we didn t see similar signs of mass death. Animals that usually succumb to freshwater are still present, and seagrasses are doing well. The impact of freshwater flooding on the shore, however, can be delayed. So it may be too early to be relieved just yet. How does freshwater impact intertidal marine life? ....

Chek Jawa with signs of dugong Once a year, we do a health check on the northern shores of Chek Jawa. This trip was particularly poignant for me as my last field trip with Subaraj was here. Rain meant a shorter survey on the sand bar as we kept closer to shelter in case of lightning. But we managed a quick check and saw dugong feeding trails in the lush seagrass meadows and other interesting marine life. Thanks to NParks for permission to survey the shore. As usual, there were lots of shorebirds. The few that I can recognise is the large Great billed heron. I miss Subaraj every time I see shorebirds, but especially on Chek Jawa. Subaraj was at our survey here in Jan 2019, where as usual, he shared his observations of the shorebirds here, and we learned so much from him. ....

December 13, 2020 As international travel is restricted, Pulau Ubin, with its rural kampung charm and nature trails, has drawn Singaporeans in droves. The Straits Times SINGAPORE - Pulau Ubin seafood restaurant Cheong Lian Yuen went from being worried about its future after the Covid-19 pandemic killed almost all visits to the island to now stressing over whether it can accommodate the number of people flocking there. A feature on the island for more than 60 years, it has seen business triple since the end of the circuit breaker in June. Mr Goh Jun Kang, 27, the third-generation owner, said: When Covid-19 first hit, business was actually really bad. We had to close our shop for two to three months. ....
