Canadian folk, jazz musicians offer entertaining options on Saturday Back to video
A couple of online concerts with strong links to Stratford offer opportunities to enjoy the work of two renowned Canadian performers Saturday evening.
Ottawa-based folk singer Craig Cardiff is preparing to release his first album in six years this summer but, before that happens, he’s scheduled a lineup of online shows including one that will double as a fundraiser for the local branch of the United Way.
“We’re certainly happy to offer some entertainment to people during this challenging time,” Chad Alberico, a United Way spokesperson, said Thursday. “It’s a great way to support the community through United Way Perth-Huron as well as supporting a Canadian artist.” ....

JUNO Nominated TORONTO TABLA ENSEMBLE's "Maryem's Here" Brings a Cultural Mix to Life: Pressparty

The goal is simple: create compelling music and showcase it with visual flair.
“This album is a simple one,” says Ritesh Das, the 62-year-old tabla virtuoso, composer and educator who leads and founded the JUNO Award-nominated Toronto Tabla Ensemble. “Most of the tracks are in very straightforward 4/4 grooves. On our other albums, you had tracks with different time signatures that made it really intellectual and complicated. But I wanted this one to be something that anyone can sit back and listen to.”
‘Simple’ here doesn t imply any sacrifice in musicianship; “Maryem’s Here” dazzles with virtuosity in its performance, interpreted with an emotional heart that connects with listeners. ....

Local folk duo Last Birds releases debut EP

The new project follows Arnold’s and Davis success with the folk group Hook & Nail, which includes a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for New/Emerging Artist of the Year in 2020, and reaching No. 4 on the SaskMusic Best Saskatchewan Albums of 2018 list.
Over the past two years, Davis and Arnold have been writing songs that focus on tight vocal harmonies and interwoven acoustic guitars, a sound based on the musical closeness possible in a husband and wife duo.
I think the songs are coming from the point of view of life after the fairy tale … Our perspective now reflects our own … As older musicians, we ve been around the block a couple of times, and you start seeing love in a different way. Love ages and takes on a certain maturity. And I think that s where the songs come from, Arnold said. ....

Jaffa Road | Jewish Rock Radio

Follow
Jaffa Road is a highly acclaimed Toronto-based ensemble, made up of some of Canada’s most exciting and innovative interpreters of intercultural music. Their sound takes listeners on a journey that is at once ancient and modern, acoustic and electronic, sacred and secular, blending influences and inspirations from the worlds of Jewish music, classical Arabic and Indian music, modern jazz, electronica, rock, pop, and dub. The vibe is ignited by the ethereal vocals of Tamar Ilana (on the third album UNTIL WHEN, which is coming very soon and with – Aviva Chernick on the first two albums), the evocative oud & guitar playing of the band’s founder Aaron Lightstone, the visionary grooves of Justin Gray (bass and bass veena), the exhilarating sounds of saxophonist/flautist Sundar Viswanathan and the driving beat of drummer & percussionist Rakesh Tewari. Along with a cadre of top-notch guest artists, these stellar musicians challenge accepted notions of Jewish music while c ....
