Canadian budget leads with digital tax and IT investments

Canada has announced plans for a digital sector tax and new funds for civil service IT projects, publishing a federal budget containing a swathe of announcements on technology initiatives for the private and public sectors.
Headline policies in the budget, unveiled on Monday, include the levying of a Digital Services Tax targeting “services that rely on data and content contributions from Canadian users”; a C$88m (US$70m) boost for the Canadian Digital Service; the creation of a new data commissioner role; and C$42m (US$33m) to fund improvements to the Canada Revenue Agency’s online services. ....

OTTAWA, ON, Feb. 9, 2021 /CNW/ - As we continue to deal with the health and economic impacts of the pandemic, we need to work together to contain the virus. Millions of Canadians are downloading and using the free COVID Alert app in an effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Today, the Minister of Health, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, and the Minister of Digital Government, the Honourable Joyce Murray, announced that the COVID Alert app will be updated to help measure its uptake, performance and effectiveness in limiting the spread of COVID-19. This will be done through the collection of certain metrics, while maintaining strong privacy measures to protect confidentiality. ....

COVID Alert update now lists dates alongside multiple exposure notifications
The CDS explains that the new system will help distinguish multiple exposure notifications and ensure people know when they ve been exposed
Canadian Digital Services (CDS) rolled out a new release of the COVID Alert app that can now display multiple exposure notifications from around the same time.
In a series of tweets, CDS explained how the change would help Canadians using COVID Alert. Before the update, the app would notify people about one exposure at a time. In some cases, when someone was repeatedly exposed in a short period of time, that could mean those exposure notifications aren’t clearly differentiated. With the update, COVID Alert now distinguishes multiple exposures. ....
