The traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ended a four-day display at the Johnson County Fairgrounds Sunday afternoon. The names of 58,281 men and women who died in the armed forces during the Vietnam War are etched into stone on the 375-foot-long display, which reaches more than seven feet tall in the middle. ....
Jun 1, 2021 / 05:06 PM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) The Wall that Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, on Tuesday got a motorcycle escort on its way to Franklin. The replica is taken to different U.S. communities to honor the fallen in the Vietnam War from 1955-1975. Kathy Ballou, the woman who helped bring the replica to Franklin, says the traveling replica allows for families who can’t travel to the District of Columbia the opportunity to pay their respects. “I have a pen pal on that wall, and that makes me feel connected to it.” Callie Wright is site manager for the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Fund. “If the name’s on the wall in D.C., you’re going to come out and we’re going to help you find that name out here.” ....
Local residents working to bring Vietnam Wall replica to Franklin All of the sudden, the letters stopped coming. Kathy Ballou didn’t think much of it. As a young Girl Scout, she had been pen pals with a U.S. Army soldier from Alabama, Sgt. Larry Joseph Purcell, who was serving in Vietnam at the time. She would send him news from the United States, as well as packets of Kool-Aid that he requested to make the muddy water where he was stationed bearable to drink. The whole idea was to thank him for his service. When her letters didn’t get any reply, Ballou figured Purcell had been discharged, or had been transferred to another base. Only years later did she learn that he had been killed in 1968. ....
