Doha: Northern Ireland’s Kris Meeke and his English navigator Sebastien Marshall finished the opening special stage of the 2021 Qatar International Rally with a 6.6-second advantage over local hero Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah at Katara, north of Doha, late yesterday.
Driving a Škoda Fabia R5 on the sealed surface stage, Meeke clocked a time of 4min 14.3sec. The 4.4km stage consisted of two runs and two laps of a purpose-built track. This followed immediately after the event’s pre-event press conference and a ceremonial start where 17 cars taking part in the FIA event and four entered in the Qatar National Rally were flagged away by senior QMMF officials. ....

The 2021 Qatar International Rally roars into life at Katara this evening with the ceremonial start podium set to be held at 8:15pm before teams will tackle two runs and two laps of a purpose-built super special stage from 9:30pm. Then, ahead of an impressive field of drivers and co-drivers from 12 nations are two days of high-speed competition across the northern deserts of the State of Qatar that will make the opening round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) such a challenge. Run under the rigorous protocols put in place for the COVID-19 pandemic, all necessary precautions have been taken. Teams have now completed their reconnaissance of the desert special stages and attention turns to setting the cars up in preparation for the rigours that lie ahead over the weekend. ....

Doha: Abdulaziz Al Kuwari will be looking to put himself in contention to win the Qatar International Rally for a second time when the opening round of the 2021 FIA Middle East Rally Championship gets underway at Katara on Friday evening.
The 41-year-old Doha-based driver has taken a relative back seat from international competition in the last few years, but backing from the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) leaves the 2012 Qatar International Rally winner hopeful that he can challenge for outright success over the 11 gravel special stages of the series opener. ....

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) has made several tweaks and improvements to the route and itinerary for the forthcoming Qatar International Rally, which will kick-start regional action in the 2021 FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) from January 28-30.
Speaking from the Dakar Rally, Clerk of the Course Pedro Almeida confirmed that the event would be more compact and with slightly more competitive distance than the last event that was staged before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019.
“All the stages have been organised in the Al Khor area, some 40km north of the Lusail Sports Complex, where the rally is based,” said Almeida. “We will run 11 special stages again, but we ran 203.72 competitive kilometres in 2019 and this has been increased to 208.36km for 2021. There are 130km less of road sections than 2019 and 36.06% of the route is competitive, compared to 28.7 ....
