Questions about costs, the future of the Mills Lawn school property and recommendations by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission dominated public comments last week during the first of three planned community forums to discuss the future of Yellow Springs’ public school buildings.
More than 70 people were present at the initial forum Thursday, Oct. 18, conducted online through the Zoom video-conference platform. Leading the meeting were representatives of the SHP architectural firm, which is working with the school district to develop a facilities master plan that district leaders hope to take to voters in November in the form of a bond levy. The district treasurer has estimated that at least $30 million will be needed to address all the issues that have been identified in the buildings, whether the community opts for renovation or new construction. ....

Yellow Springs school district leaders are pushing forward to develop a plan to address identified structural needs in the local public school buildings.
During the school board’s most recent regular meeting, conducted online Thursday, Jan. 14, board members unanimously approved a contract with SHP Leading Design, designating the Cincinnati-based firm as the “pre-bond architect” that will work with the district in developing a new master plan for Yellow Springs school facilities.
The contract approval followed a special board meeting Monday, Dec. 28, held specifically to hear Superintendent Terri Holden’s recommendation and name the firm whose work will include helping the district prepare a bond levy measure to take to local voters. The superintendent and board’s goal is to have a facilities issue on the ballot in November. The treasurer has estimated the cost for repair or new construction of the district’s buildings at a minimum of $30 million. ....

Yellow Springs School District leaders anticipate a $30 million price tag, at minimum, to upgrade the district’s buildings, whether those improvements take the form of new construction or major renovations.
The amount, presented during a school board work session Saturday morning, Nov. 21, is similar to projected total costs, ranging from about $27 million to $31 million, listed when the district began an active push in 2017 to address identified facility needs at its two campuses.
“Now we’re almost four years further down the road,” Superintendent Terri Holden told the board. “Where do we go from here?”
The facilities issue isn’t going away, board President Steve Conn said at the start of the meeting, which was conducted online and streamed on the district’s YouTube Channel. ....
