KEY ACTION The board of education approved the treasurer s agenda, which projected a much improved financial status for the district.
KEY DISCUSSION The board discussed the good news of the district s financial rally, which Superintendent Jeffrey Layton attributed to a number of factors, ranging from reducing expenditures to receiving federal stimulus money.
Layton cited a significant carryover balance of $4.6 million. Included in the calculations are raises over the next three years tentatively agreed to. The (fiscal) picture looks pretty good right now.
Quarterly financial meetings with a diverse membership are targeted at developing a long-term plan to sustain financial stability once the stimulus money runs out, Layton said.
WEST SALEM The Northwestern Local Schools District reported a positive turnaround in its fiscal status based on budget reductions and an accounting error by the treasurer.
The district s fluctuating financial condition has ranged from a near desperate situation at the end of 2020, to a projected ending carryover balance of $3.3 million at the end of this school year.
That s the good news. The bad news is budget-cutting reductions were made based on incorrect information.
Treasurer Lesa Forbes did not reconcile the five-year forecast with actual budget numbers, resulting in an accounting discrepancy of $1.2 million. The board followed the data on the five-year forecast, believing it had $1.2 million fewer dollars available.

DISCUSSION Brightbill has served as building principal for two years and had previously held the position of middle school principal for four years.
He will be taking over as a principal in Stark County s Lake Local Schools, a district closer to his home.
The opening for Northwestern Elementary School principal has been posted, Superintendent Jeffrey Layton said.
High School Principal Randall Hafner was approved for a three-year contract, Aug. 1, 2022 - July 31, 2025.
A three-year contract, effective for the same dates, also was approved for High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Anita Jorney-Gifford.

Treasurer Lesa Forbes will present the district s financial forecast at a meeting later this month.

West Holmes Local Schools
Who will be administering the vaccines? Holmes County General Health District.
What will the day look like? Employees will show up to the West Holmes High School gymnasium during their scheduled time slot. The health department has said it can vaccinate about 18 people in 15-minute increments, Superintendent John Thomas said. School nurse Tom Eastep scheduled staff based on what category they fall into; essentially, older staff members and those with compromising health conditions will be prioritized.
