New Delhi [India], January 11 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and DGP, Government of Maharashtra calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks regarding the deaths of 10 infants due to fire in Bhandara District General hospital. The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that ten infants were killed in a fire that swept through the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra on 09.01.2021, read a press statement from NHRC.

As many as ten newborn babies died after a fire broke out at a hospital in Maharashtra. According to the details, the fire was reported in the Special Newborn Care Unit of a hospital, in the wee hours on Saturday. All the infants were between a month and three months old, a doctor said. The fire broke out in the Bhandara district hospital at around 2 am, he said. There were 17 babies in the unit and seven were rescued, he added.
Another doctor said a nurse first noticed smoke coming out from the neonatal section of the hospital and alerted doctors and other staff who reached there in five minutes.

The babies lost their lives due to suffocation after the smoke engulfed the building. The infants were aged between a month and three months.
When the staff at work opened the door of the unit, they noticed a large quantity of smoke inside. The incident was immediately reported to the seniors. Soon, the fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
In a major accident in Maharashtra s Raigad district, a speeding tempo fell into a gorge, claiming the lives of two passengers. The incident took place in Kudpan near Poladpur on Friday evening. Along with two casualties, it has also left 65 other passengers injured.

Bhandara : , Jan 9 (IANS) In what is considered a shocking lapse, 10 infants were killed and another 7 were saved after a fire ravaged through the children s ward of a government hospital here in the wee hours of Saturday.
Shaken by the incident and the national outrage over the innocents deaths, the Maharashtra government ordered a thorough investigation into the incident besides seeking a full-scale fire, electrical and structural audit of all hospitals in the state.
