Jeers comment

Editor: I’m writing to commend your recent “jeers” comment about our legislators’ non-accountable expense plan. I really wish someone would do an investigation into this. I am a tax accountant and the IRS code states that the reimbursement for a non-accountable plan must be reported as income on their tax return — I wonder if this is being done for those representatives that have $1.4 million in expenses, using taxpayer’s money? And if not, why are they above the law?
I’m thinking of all the places that money would be better spent: our education system, grants for small businesses, healthcare for those that work and don’t have it or can’t afford their employer’s plan, improving our infrastructure, building up recreational places and programs to attract people outdoors, funding for organizations like the YMCA and other community centers to aid in affordable daycare for working parent. I’m sure there are many more. ....

Years later, the Internal Revenue Service got wind of the arrangement, which it condemned as an “abusive” tax shelter. The move by Bristol Myers, the I.R.S. concluded, would cheat the United States out of about $1.4 billion in taxes. ....

Are You a Tax Procrastinator? Doubtful If You Live In Washington

Are You a Tax Procrastinator? Doubtful If You Live In Washington
It s been said that death and taxes are the only two certainties in this life. Most of us try to push them back as long as possible but, when it comes to filing our federal tax returns, it appears, we Washingtonians seem to get the inevitable over with as soon as possible.

For my wife and I, we try our best to get everything together and off to our accountant right when we get them so we have time to prepare if we do end up owing more to Uncle Sam. That said, we also try to be right around $0 (zero) every year as I don t want the feds making interest off of our money all year so we re usually plus or minus $100 when our tax forms are completed. That puts us in the majority with other taxpayers in the state of Washington. ....
