Louisiana Tech ASCE chapter wins three awards at regional competition

The Louisiana Tech University student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) notched two first-place wins and a third-place finish at the 2021 Deep South Conference.
The team won first place in the Sustainable Solutions Competition and with the Mead Paper, and third place in the Environmental Competition of the virtual conference.
After the 2020 competition was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19 last spring, the team was determined to make the 2021 season a successful one. When students returned to campus in the Fall 2020 Quarter, the team began developing strategies to compete in the upcoming 2021 ASCE competitions while practicing social distancing. ....

Louisiana Tech selected to host 2022 ASCE international competition

In June 2022, college students from around the world will converge on Ruston to socialize, network, and lock horns for a top spot in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Concrete Canoe Competition.
Thanks to the hard work of Louisiana Tech University’s ASCE student chapter, the University has been selected to host the international competition. Former Louisiana Tech ASCE student president Katya Opel, who received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 2020, came up with the idea for Tech to bid on hosting the 2022 competition shortly after Tech hosted the regional Deep South competition in 2019. Opel will have a busy summer in 2022; she will be completing her Master of Science in Civil Engineering program while planning the event. ....

TTC director, board members honored at 2021 No-Dig Show

The North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) honored Dr. John Matthews, director of Louisiana Tech’s Trenchless Technology Center and associate professor of civil engineering and construction engineering technology at the University, Lynn Osborn, Trenchless Technology Center board member, and James Barbera, former TTC board member, at the 2021 No-Dig Show.

The NASTT bestowed the 2021 NASTT Chair Award for Distinguished Service on Matthews for prominent, long-standing service in the trenchless technology industry. At the same show, Osborn and Barbera were inducted into the NASTT Hall of Fame Class of 2020 for outstanding accomplishments and exceptional contributions to the advancement of the North American trenchless industry. ....

MSU, USM have embraced construction industry with programs

Building construction degree programs at two state universities are bringing trained employees into the construction industry where they can have long-term careers. The programs at Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi have been embraced by the construction industry.
Lee Nations, president and CEO of the Associated Builders and Contractors Mississippi Chapter, said, âABC Mississippi serves on the Advisory Board of both programs at MSU and USM. We work with the programs to provide speakers, programming assistance and industry networking opportunities.ââ¨Â
He says the programs are beneficial to entering the construction industry. âBoth construction related degrees are extremely beneficial.
