Talk of Batman cocaine and murder: How the FBI tricked criminals with encrypted phones

SAN DIEGO — The full extent of an unprecedented FBI effort to beat the criminal underworld at its own encrypted-communications game became clearer Tuesday following a two-day takedown, with some 800 arrests worldwide and San Diego racketeering indictments against 17 high-level targets, according to federal authorities.
Dubbed Operation Trojan Shield, the effort was largely led by FBI agents and federal prosecutors in San Diego who covertly created a closed-loop encryption cellphone service, called ANOM, and then convinced trusted voices already embedded in criminal syndicates to distribute the customized phones.
The agents secretly read each message that poured in — 27 million in all. They read about shipments of cocaine stamped with Batman logos, cocaine hidden in tuna cans headed to Belgium, cocaine sent in French diplomatic pouches and cocaine in refrigerated fish destined for Spain, according to a search warrant unsealed this week. ....

Rev. Gerald Brown, community leader, honored with FBI director's award

Print
As the Rev. Gerald Brown stood at the back of the room during a town hall to educate the community about how to report hate crimes, he wondered why none of the presenters looked like him.
So he raised his hand and asked.
He reminded the organizers a mix of law enforcement and civic leaders that Black people were the overwhelming targets of race-based hate crimes in San Diego County, according to statistics. Shouldn’t there be at least one Black representative at the table in the fight against hate?
He got a call from the FBI soon after, and Brown has been working with its agents ever since to engage in difficult conversations and promote understanding between San Diego’s Black community and law enforcement. ....

Man convicted of bringing Molotov cocktails to La Mesa protest

SAN DIEGO
A San Diego man was convicted Tuesday of bringing Molotov cocktails to last year’s police brutality protest at La Mesa police headquarters.
Zachary Alexander Karas, 29, was found guilty of possession of an unregistered destructive device following a two-day jury trial in San Diego federal court. After the jury returned a guilty verdict, U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw remanded Karas into custody.
Prosecutors alleged Karas had two glass bottles containing gasoline, wicks and gas bombs during the protest, which began May 30 and carried over into the morning of May 31.
According to a prosecutor’s trial brief, officers spotted Karas and his girlfriend sitting on the pavement at the corner of Allison Avenue and Spring Street around 2 a.m. May 31. Karas also stood in the intersection, blocking traffic. ....
