Summer isn’t over yet, but candidates in Franklin’s fall municipal election have already started campaigning.
This October will be the first city election with significant turnover on the board since 2007; three of the four sitting ward aldermen up for election won’t run for another term — Scott Speedy, Dana McLendon and Margaret Martin — nor will interim Alderman At-Large John Schroer.
Schroer, a former Franklin mayor, was appointed to serve as alderman in the winter of 2020 after the death of Pearl Bransford, who served in that role for 13 years.  ....

On a spectacular spring morning, a large American flag, a much smaller one and faux flowers adorn John Willie Woods Junior’s gravestone at Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery in Franklin. More than half a century after his death in Vietnam, Mattie Lee Kinnard surely would be touched that her son is so well remembered.
Woods was only 19 when the helicopter he was aboard plunged into the jungle in a fiery explosion, killing him and three of his crewmates on Oct. 30, 1966. He was one of 342 American military deaths that month during the Vietnam War, one of 6,350 that year, one of 58,220 for the United States in the lengthy conflict.  ....

SWRHA: People with appointments take priority over walk-in clients

SWRHA: People with appointments take priority over walk-in clients
- Lincoln Holder
Yet again, the South-West Regional Health Authority is encouraging the public to make appointments before visiting any of its covid19 vaccination sites.
SWRHA’s corporate communications manager Kevon Gervais told Newsday on Thursday that people with appointments take priority over the walk-in clients.
He said, If there are vials (containers storing the World Health Organization-approved vaccine) opened after the person with the last appointment received the vaccine, then those (walk-in clients) would get it.
Gervais spoke on behalf of the SWRHA.
SWRHA has ten sites in the region. Gervais said as of Tuesday, a total of 1,052 people has been vaccinated, 850 of them on Wednesday. ....
