Body recovered from KwaZulu-Natal river after four-day search

Police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a suspected drowning victim was recovered from the Umzimkhulu River in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday. 
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that search and rescue services had returned to the St Faiths area, on the south coast for the fourth day in search of the body. 
The victim was located approximately 4km downriver in an inaccessible area and members were dropped off, recovered the body and walked back to the helicopter. The body was then flown out to the awaiting St Faiths SAPS members on scene. An inquest docket was opened,” said Mbele.  ....

Cape Town - A fifteen-year-old boy from Manenberg went missing in the surf on Sunday while swimming with family members at Melkbosstrand.
His disappearance came as thousands of families flocked to the city’s beaches and swimming pools ahead of the New Year weekend.
National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon said three sea rescue craft were launched to join in the search and lifeguards were deployed into the surfline to conduct sweeping line-free dive search efforts.
However, despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search, there was no sign of the teenager, he said. A police dive unit was tasked to continue the search and they will be assisted by services that are on duty in the area. ....

A malnourished donkey was rescued after being stranded on an island on the Vaal Dam.
The donkey reportedly went onto the island when water levels were low, but was unable to get back to mainland when water levels rose.
The animal has been reunited with its owners.

A new water safety camera at a Cape Town beach has quickly proved its worth by playing a key role in saving two lives.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteer Randall Trapido was monitoring footage from the camera at Strand beach when he saw two men on a sea kayak struggling against a strong southeaster 200m offshore at around 4pm on Monday. ....
