Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan was one of 20 recipients of the grant.
They were awarded $1,500.
They say this money will go towards background check for their adult volunteers.
Development coordinator, Kris Hoxie, says this will cover 50% of those fees for one year.
Hoxie says, “Those reduced costs actually allow us to increase our recruitment efforts for volunteers. So that we can actually begin to serve more children.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan says this grant will also allow them to focus their efforts on recruiting volunteers.
The Traverse City Optimist Club recently awarded $17,250 in grants to twenty local youth-oriented organizations. Grants ranging from $250 to $1,500 were given to the following organizations:
Wednesday skiing

INTERLOCHEN â Interlochen Chamber of Commerce hosts âLighting Up Interlochenâ at 5 p.m. Dec. 11 at Tomâs Food Markets. Santa Claus lights a 20-foot pixel tree, and Green Lake Township EMS staff distribute prepackaged treats at Interlochen Public Library. The light and sound shows occur every half hour from 5-9:30 p.m. through Jan. 1.
