St. Augustine considers balloon-release ban to protect wildlife

People release balloons during celebrations and other occasions. People also use balloons locally to help with fishing, which Morley described as intentional littering.
But what some might not realize is that creatures get caught in the string or eat the balloons or balloon fragments, which can injure or kill them. Balloons contribute to the hefty amount of garbage on beaches and in the ocean or rivers.
In response to the issue, the city of St. Augustine is looking to join other local governments in banning the release of balloons.

Rescued Sea Turtles to Be Released Into the Wild – Winthrop Transcript

Following a historic season that saw hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles wash ashore on Cape Cod, the New England Aquarium sent off 25 rehabilitated turtles to be released back into the wild from the North Carolina coast.
The turtles spent the past four to six months at the Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy. Volunteer pilots with the non-profit organization Turtles Fly Too met animal care staff members at the Marshfield Airport to safely get the turtles onboard and en route to North Carolina’s warmer waters off Fort Macon State Park. Three planes transported the rehabilitated turtles south, along with nine turtles from National Marine Life Center and Mystic Aquarium. ....

The St. Augustine Beach Civic Association has faced ups and downs, on and offs, and other obstacles in its efforts to move forward with the 19th season of the Wednesday night Music by the Sea summer concerts at Pier Park. The good news, as of this writing, is that the shows will go on, but with some alterations and conditions. Two weeks ago, they were looking at ticket requirements with limited attendance in order to comply with local and federal COVID-19 regulations. That has changed in the past week.
