Government of Canada and Heiltsuk Nation collaborate to develop a local Marine Emergency Response Team

BELLA BELLA, BC, March 16, 2021 /CNW/ - Coastal First Nations have an intimate knowledge of lands and waters in their territory, and are often the first on the scene when there s an emergency on the water. When they are empowered to manage these environments, everyone benefits.  Today, the Government of Canada and the Heiltsuk Nation are announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) committing both organizations to work together to enhance the Nation s role in marine environmental response within the Heiltsuk territory.
Under the MOU, the Heiltsuk Nation, in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada, will further develop a Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT) pilot to support a community-based oil spill response within its territory. This pilot project will test concepts and inform future discussions about how to improve Canada s national oil spill preparedness and response regime. ....

Hazardous materials scattered along Marco Island after boats wash ashore
MARCO ISLAND, Fla. A 25-foot TowboatU.S. towboat and a 42-foot sailboat washed ashore on the north side of Marco Island just after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The towboat had been assisting the disabled sailboat when it capsized and sent two people into the water with five to seven-foot waves, according to David Baer, Police Captain and spokesperson for the Marco Island Police Department.
When the towboat capsized, the two people and dog aboard the disabled sailboat left their vessel in a dinghy.
Rescue crews with the Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT) call, including the Marco Island Police and Fire Rescue Departments, the Greater Naples Fire-Rescue District, and United States Coast Guard helped respond to the capsized boat. ....
