It’s a photo of lily pads in Georgia’s massive Okefenokee Swamp, but closer inspection reveals something alarming just below.

A Georgia rattlesnake is giving people the creeps on social media, after a photo posted on Facebook showcased the species’ astounding ability to blend into its surroundings.
“Can you find the snake?” Georgia’s Coastal Ecology Lab asked. “Did you know that Eastern diamondbacks are the longest and heaviest venomous snake in North America?”
Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes have a bite that is toxic (there is an antivenom), and they can grow up to 8 feet and 10 pounds, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute. ....

Wildlife officials in Georgia are investigating the death of a rare indigo snake named Rocky who was killed last month.
Eastern Indigo Snakes are a threatened species, so they’re federally protected. It’s also illegal to kill nonvenomous snakes in Georgia.
Harassing or killing a species protected by the Endangered Species Act is a felony punishable by fines, prison time and the revocation of hunting privileges. Killing a nonvenomous snake in Georgia carries a fine of up to $1,000 and up to a year in prison. ....
