ORANGE COUNTY, CA Another 29 people have died due to coronavirus in Orange County, raising the death toll to 2,868, Orange County Health Care reported. Hospitalization rates stayed on a downward trend, they say.
Of the fatalities reported Thursday, two were assisted living facility residents. That raises the death toll to 310 assisted living facility residents, with 813 skilled nursing facility residents also succumbing to coronavirus.
So far, in January, 424 people have died of coronavirus-related causes in the county. The last confirmed coronavirus fatality happened on Jan. 17. The death reports come from various sources and are delayed, so the numbers will keep rising through next month.

IRVINE, CA UC Irvine scientists are developing a vaccine to attack all strains of coronavirus, the university reported Thursday. Along with the vaccine, scientists say they have identified a potential breakthrough that if it works would solve many of the problems related to distributing the medicine to patients across the world, a UCI professor on the project says.
Professor Lbachir BenMohamed a UCI School of Medicine professor of Immunology and the founder of the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Immunology at the University of California, Irvine says that his team is developing what they envision will be a vaccine that could work on all strains in the SARS-CoV-2 family.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA The United States Postal Service Friday announced the removal of mailboxes across the Southland as a precaution taken amid the threat of extremist violence leading up to Inauguration Day. Without specifying the threat, the postal service announced plans to remove more than a dozen collection mailboxes in Los Angeles and Orange counties for security reasons amid threats of potential for violence surrounding next week s inauguration of President-Elect Joe Biden.Specifically, three mailboxes will be removed in Huntington Beach, a region of Orange County with a history of white supremacist violence.
