0:47 The Yonkers mayor is calling on SUNY to establish a community college campus in the city. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano wants SUNY to purchase the 32-acre property at human services organization Rising Ground, formerly Leake & Watts, in the southeastern portion of the city overlooking the Hudson River. He says the site could serve as a second campus for Westchester Community College, seeing as 25 percent of the college’s students are Yonkers residents. A spokeswoman says SUNY is open to any good idea to reach more New Yorkers with a SUNY education. She says, “Given this is a case of first impression, we will need to do our due diligence to make sure it could work financially and academically.” The college has six extension center locations, including in Yonkers. ....
Nonprofit Rising Ground to sell former Leake & Watts property News 12 Staff Updated on:Feb 11, 2021, 9:47am EST Nonprofit Rising Ground announced that its Yonkers property, formerly known as Leake & Watts, is officially on the market. The 32-acre riverfront property has 130 years of history, with the Leake & Watts Orphan House founded in Yonkers in 1890. Rising Ground CEO Alan Mucatel says the property is being sold to enhance the nonprofit s long-term financial viability. Transwestern Real Estate Services, which listed the property, estimates it s worth more than $60 million. Mayor Mike Spano says it is likely the last large parcel of property in Yonkers. He says he is sad to see the nonprofit go. ....
