Willie Nelson has had the most amazing life, both onstage and off.
Born Willie Hugh Nelson in Abbott, Texas in 1933, during the Great Depression, Nelson wrote his first song at the age of 7 and joined his first band at 10. He served in the Air Force and worked as a disc jockey before moving to Nashville, where he became an in-demand songwriter.
Nelson wrote a number of classics that were made famous by other artists, including Funny How Time Slips Away, Hello Walls, Pretty Paper and Crazy. His early solo albums saw reasonable success, but after he moved to Austin, grew his hair and re-invented himself as a self-styled country outlaw, he became one of the leaders of a new Outlaw Country movement in the 1970s. ....

Jazz is back
Wilbur Rehmann, on saxophone, and Ken Nelson, on piano, are playing jazz classics at 6 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Benny’s Bistro. This is the first time in 2021 that the duo has played at Benny’s, bringing their special jazz style back to Helena.
Rehmann and Nelson have played together for many years, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic their live performances were put on hold.
Known for classic jazz songs from such composers as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, they will be playing smooth ballads and lively jump tunes along with sambas and bossa novas. ....

Around the time most honky-tonk bartenders are headed home for the night, Tyler Mahan Coe shuffles toward his book-strewn office in the East Nashville apartment he shares with his girlfriend and records “Cocaine & Rhinestones,” his fiercely told, relentlessly researched podcast on the history of country music.
“About 1:30 a.m. is when all the neighbors get quiet and cars stop driving by outside, and about 5:30 or 6 is when the birds outside start making noise,” Coe said during a recent call.
Coe, the son of Outlaw Country singer-songwriter David Allan Coe and who dropped out of high school at 15 to play guitar in his dad’s band, had just finished taping the fifth episode in his season-long exploration of country singer George Jones an artist he said “just happened to have this chest cavity that glowed with so much air.” The first episode, ....
